our final production

question 2

Preliminary Task

This is my preliminary task were i practised different filming techniques such as: the rule of thirds, comply with the 180 degree rule, use a shot reverse shot and match on action. This task was a starter to get comfortable with using a camera.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our task i have used the film 'phyco' to gain ideas from for the part of the villain. I noticed that the criminal in this film has music following him whenever he walks or runs, the relations of a female being murdered in alfred hitch-cocks film and my film a similar because the criminal takes a woman captive. Both females are doing stereotypical things such as folding up clothes or in my case working in the kitchen.

Our task is different from the blockbuster hits as it has has no edited lighting or filter, our film is completely natural lighting. Usually in big films there would be some sort of speech or credit explaining the story line, we have not got this to add suspense the only form of writing is the credits of the logo and the names of actors.

question 6

Before the preliminary task i was not confident enough to use a camera. But through the lessons i learnt methods such as the 180 rule, the rule of thirds and shot reverse shot i became a lot more able to film. To make the preliminary task look more creative i used close ups and typical shots. Although these points helped our task become more creative there were fault's such as changes of backgrounds and different angles that were not corrected. The music added ontop of the film helped rid of some sounds that we did not want in our task. Other faults including two different lighting as one day we had to film in a school kitchen with no windows but it was added into a scene filmed with windows. This task has helped make me more confident in understanding the rules of filming and the use of a camera.

Further Casting

When choosing our actors we need people to meet our expectations, the male in our film would preferably be quite bulky and threatening. In our actual film we have used Lewis Broughton to be our criminal. He was wearing a mask which made him look more intimidating. With the female we used Marcia and based her in the kitchen to make her look more innocent.

  • Looks
  • masculinity
  • innocence
  • threat
  • gender

setting

The place where our film was shot was at Marcias house, this location was right because it was near a main road meaning it goes with the duration of the story board.

Putting my sequence together

when putting together my sequence on final cut pro i learned alot of skills to do with mac work. It was very complicated but together with my classmates we organised a routine in wich we could all learn. The non-diegitic music that was added gave our peice a setting for the genre.

We found sounds on incompitech which is a website you can find songs and sound effects on. The final scene where our victim has her first incounter with the criminal is very tense and dramatic, i used research from films such as 'the shinning' as you can see in my post number #1. The music in the opening sequence of this film is very simular to the music in ours. It is tense with a comical twist.

Marcia and Brianna were very confident with editing the film where as i was learning as it was coming together. I think that our sequence is very succesful and creative.

This is the second logo text i found very useful when creating logos, i think that simple black and white colors and modern street art design is very attractive.
This is the website where i found the non-diegetic sounds to set the scene when our criminal breaks into the house.

  • what sounds are you looking for?
  • why do you need these sounds?
  • was this website helpful?
Radio sounds and police sirens, we found this website to be very useful when looking for sounds to fill in our film.

This is the first attempt of my groups logo, i found this text on funkyfonts.com, from this image i have branched out other ideas to improve the logo i am still deciding which logo will be used in the actual opening sequence.

who we need an actress

We need an actress ages 17-20 to play the role of a victim of a criminal. In my mind i have the image of a very innocent looking girl because criminals and victims are two strong components. When analyzing what the girl would look like, personally i would have hoped for her to have blonde hair and skinny figure.

This would make the man look more masculine and appear as more as a threat to the woman.

Blogg Feedback

In my bloggers i can make them look better by using my graphics skills to show creativity in my bloggs, at the moment i am on a grade D, i am not happy with this so i shall make my blogg posts more attractive and look more appealing using prezi, pictures and my imagination. To improve my grade and bring it up i will add more text icons and graphology to my feeds.

The feedback i have been given will be taken into account and shown in the posts i will make.

Opening Sequence Ideas

Opening sequence ideasWhen deciding ideas with my group to create Romantic Drama we agreed that there should be a disaster. The first idea is ;

A girl is struck down by a car driving past over 30, after knowing that he has hit her he drives away. The family are very upset and distraught when they find out what has happened, as the family rush to the hospital they find out she is diagnosed with with a permanent brain damage which then causes her to loose her memory. Her partner then tries to help her recap her life, this is very hard because she no longer has the feelings she felt for him previous to the car crash. She then dies without knowing she has MS. However, we decided this concept was unrealistic for us as we could not manage to actually create a car crash as it would be very hard for the audience to understand fully without the correct equipment.

The film begins with a trouble young man who gets himself into a lot of trouble, he loots a house one night and is finally being tracked by the police. In a panic he runs away and barges into a house where a women lives alone. He keeps her hostage, using threatening behaviour to scare the women and stop her from escaping. As the story unfolds the two protagonists spend a lot of time together, at the start he ties the woman down letting her drink and eat little. However as he begins to see what he has become he starts to talk and chat more to the woman, in which she finds comforting. He begins to let her move freely around her house more but not leave it, he releases some emotional background stories of a troubled childhood and family life. Explaining why he is like he is and reasoning for his behaviour. The women sympathizes with the man and agree to try and create him a new life, making him look different, giving him a different name etc. Through helping him develop they both realise they have feelings for one another and fall deeply in love. Eventually his court case is closed and together they welcome a new, happy life with each other as a couple.

A girl gets hit by a drunk driver in a car late at night, the driver leaves her on the floor and drives away. Police then start to try and track the driver down and the girls family are distraught as they find out what has happened. The family all rush to the hospital and the girl is diagnosed with permanent brain damage causing her to lose her memory. The girls boyfriend tries his best to help her remember her life however it is very difficult for her when she doesn't know who his is and no longer feels in love with him. In the end the girl dies as she doesn't realise she has MS. However, we decided this concept was unrealistic for us as we could not recreate the car crash in a way that would enable the audience to see her get hit by the car with the equipment available to us.

Influence

Influence0
The film 500 days of summer, influences me because of the style it is made in. I have used this film because i like the way it is produced, the narrator, the graphic scenery that brings it together and the light hearted tone throughout the whole film. The setting of the film is set in new york giving it a range of landmarks that the audience can relate to, i will take this into account when creating my own setting in my opening scene. The genre of the opening scene i will be creating will be a romantic comedy, like 500 days of summer. I will focus on the non diegetic music that is added in by looking at the album for the movie that involves very deep songs for the romantic scenes such as 'here we are' and the comical songs such as 'dreams come true'.

The film is clever and independent and helps me think of ideas to make mine better. The twist at the end when the boy meets 'Autumn' is very ironic as the film is about the time he spends with summer. This is the climax of the narrative structure although the film is set randomly in the past present and past but keeps a structured story line, i will take these things into account when creating my own opening sequence.

moodboard

All of the films i have chosen link to the opening sequence i will create, i have chosen these specifically because the way they are produced is very inspiring to me

what have i learnt

What have i learnt from my open sequence research?

I have learnt that the structure of the sequences are all different from each other, for example a film like spiderman would have a layout like a spiderweb with the credits layed out on the webs. When making my own opening sequence i will be focusing on the presentation of titles, which is most important and deserves to be shown first. The music will also set the scene per say because if an opening sequence had soft relaxing piano music it would be automatically make the viewer assume it is a light hearted film aposed to a superhero film.

Things that create a good opening sequence is an establishing shot, structured order of imprtance and a genre that can be understood in the first 30 seconds. From the three opening sequnces i have studied i have learnt that to make a good structured opening scene there has to be an order of importance for the credits. Non-digetic music also helps to piece the scene together, without this the genre is harderto grasp. For instance, 'The Shinning' opening scene has long brass music, that creates a sad tone, dark and mysterious i will take these into acount when creating my own opening sequence.

Things i have learnt from studying film openings is that without certain pointers, it can be very easy to create a bad scene. Without an establishing shot, non-digetic music and order of importance the scene would not piece together very well.  The narrative and structure of the opening sequence of a film should construct of a described structural framework that underlines the order and manner of the titles, framed images on screen and contrasts them together.

Beana vista international comes up first in the list of importance because it has the most significance in the production of the film. After this the next most significant credit is spyglass entertainment as it is another large company that produces many classics it is pragmatically correct in media for the high ranking companies to be before actors or costume designers for example, you wouldn't see the music composer before the producer of the actual film. The actors are the last to be shown in the credits over the establishing shot.

Analysis

Conglomerates are the first credits to appear as they are the producers of the film and therefore the most important. Music then begins this music is non-diegetic. The music fits to the genre of the film as it is a light hearted film with sad scenes. The feather that falls continuously and fits into the tempo of the music that is put in after during the editing of the film. After paramount pictures the next credits that are introduced are the producers, my opinion on Steve Tisch and Wendy Finerman being placed second in the order of credits shows power, or importance over the other credits seen after. The feather that falls\floats appears in time with the credits. To follow this a tracking shot is used, bringing it into the establishing shot where the scene is set. The feather is used to show destiny or something that is meant to be as it makes its way through traffic and passers by and its course ends at Forrest Gump who places the feather in is briefcase. He holds this case in a childlike way to show the autism that he has. The feather ends its course on Forrest's shoes, these are put into a close up shot to show charactor, the shoes are taccy old and ripped. All appart from the laces which look bright and new, this shows an aspect of his asperges.

Analysis

The first credit introduced previous to the establishing shot is Warner bros pictures this could show an aspect of importance as it is shown first. The establishing shot is created with a camera shot attached to a helicopter this is a perfect opening credit setting. The camera follows a car that is driving in the mountains during this a sequence of bright colored credits that represent happiness which is a false sense of security although the non-diegetic music is very gothic and horror related so it is ironic. The overall conclusion of the mood of the film opening issad, gloomy and sureal.
